If you’re looking for some more modern fun in October, you might want to check out the Denver Modern Home Tour this weekend, October 22. The event is being produced by a team out of Austin, TX. They’ve produced similar events in other cities, but this is their first time in Denver. Now, they aren’t mid-century modern homes. More new modern homes.

Before we realized that Denver had mid-century modern homes, Tim and I were trying to figure out how we could finagle a new modern home. We’re happy that we ended up in our 1955 mid-mod home, but we always love to hit open houses at new modern homes. Of course, I’m always tickled to see how many “new” home features are actually recycled ideas from mid-century builders. Hey, if it was a good idea in the 1950′s, then it’s probably still a good design idea, right?

Anyway, if you’re interested in new modern homes and/or trying to check out different developments (single family and multi-family homes) here in the Denver area, you should try to check out the Denver Modern Home Tour on Saturday, October 22.

If you happened to see my blog a few weeks ago, I posted about my friend, Tiffany, and her cool vintage, mini-modern estate sale finds. She had listed her “rooms in miniature” on ebay. We were really hoping that they would find a new home where they could be appreciated.

The three “rooms” did sell on ebay. The living room was bought by blogger, Call of the Small. She assembled the set and took great picture of the room on her blog. Head over there to see the awesomeness. Tiffany is trying to contact the buyer of the other two “rooms” to see if we can see assembled photos of her two rooms. I still can’t believe that they sold these little rooms with everything down to the artwork, wall panels and furniture. So much fun!

When we got back from Thanksgiving vacation, we thought things were a little strange in the house. A plant was knocked over and then I started finding little bits of poo. We freaked out thinking it was from mice. But, we couldn’t seem to trap the mice. A week later, Tim ran upstairs after working in the garage (on the kitchen cabinets) and found the culprit. We had a squirrel trying to make our home his home. We aren’t sure how he got in, but we think it was the fireplace….since he ran straight for it when we flushed him out.

We’re not sure if the flu was messed up or what. But, we don’t light many fires and we just haven’t had time to put a proper animal deterrent thingy on the top of the fireplace. The firewood stuffed fireplace was my aesthetically pleasing answer to keeping the squirrels out.

Postscript: Now the squirrel sneers at us from outside of our window. We think he’s plotting his revenge.

I’ve gotten really anxious that it looks like we just moved in. I’m tired of meeting people at the house and explaining that we “are still in process”. I know how much we’ve accomplished, but I’m ready to have art on the walls. I’m ready for our house to be lived in. And, like it always happens, I happened to find some goodies on Craigslist. I found this CB2 rug on Craigslist. The size is perfect when I only have 2 or 3 leaves in the table. It seems a little undersized when I have the table extended out to its full 8 feet.

This is another rug I got at a new consignment shop west of Denver, Mod Mood.

I’ve been on the lookout for at Atomic clock for Tim, but I never found anything until now that was in my price range and the right scale. I also got this at ModMood. You can’t really see it, but I also got the rug on this floor this weekend. It’s a West Elm rug, but I bought it on Craigslist. It was a good weekend. I got three rugs for under $350. I would love to have beautiful Angela Adams like rugs that are soft and cuddly, but it’s nice to get a bargain and it seems a little silly to buy anything to precious with a crazy preschooler in my house.

I also bought this little cocktail cart. Tim isn’t wild about it, but I like that I can actually serve from it and it’s mobile. I also like the mix of teak and metal. I also got the little vintage wood ice bucket from Lee Alex Decor here in Denver.

It’s been rather fun being back in the house this Christmas. We had to spend last Christmas in the apartment when our remodel went “slightly” over schedule. So, I may have gotten a little too excited with celebrating this year. However, I’ve never had much space or much Christmas decorating “stuff”. So, I’m only an amateur at this Christmas decorating business. And, by the way, I’m not much for the standard red and green decorations.

Pic 1: My starburst wreath made from twigs. I saw where folks at “The Painted Hive” made it and posted it on their blog here.

Pic 2: Christmas tree made from cut out paper circles made from mod paper.

Pic 3: Ty dressed as a lumberjack in front of the Christmas tree.

Pic 4: View of the living room and Christmas tree—Ty about to open gifts on Christmas morning.

Pic 5 and 6: I finally got to sit a proper dining room table with my grandmother’s china. I think it’s from the 1960′s, but I love how it looks timeless.

There have been so many great gingerbread houses across the modern blogosphere, like our AtomicIndy friends here.. While I don’t have the artistic talent, I wanted in on the fun. A few families on my block got together for a little gingerbread making party. We had seven kids and three mommas. We set the kiddos up with graham crackers and all of the fixings, but we had the good homemade baked gingerbread fixings for the moms.

It was a little frantic with the frosting flying for seven kids between the ages of 20 months and 9 years old, but it was fun. Stacie and I both attempted to do gingerbread houses inspired by our own home designs. Stacie has great pictures of her own house on her own blog here. I made a few extra houses with basic butterfly roofs for the other two moms.

The kids had a blast!

Personally, I love this house the best. I baked the walls, but my architect/former engineer neighbor, Jo, totally rocked this butterfly roof house. I just loved it.
