Let the stripping begin

by lesley on February 9, 2009

While our architect is busy working on our remodel plans, Tim and I have been busy starting on projects in the existing house. As I explained in earlier posts, we have many wood walls, wood beams, wood frames around every window and door and wood kitchen cabinets…ALL covered up with layers of paint.

Tim and I have experimented with a few different strippers…the best one so far is “Soy Gel”…unfortunately, it is expensive, but maybe will end up costing less since we may not need to apply as much or as many coats.

I called the local “Dip n Strip” to see if we could bring all of the removable wood panels and cabinets, but the cost is too high for us. I got initial estimates of $25 per drawer front and $110 per door…so, the stripping is a completely in-house project now.

Here are pics of the wood walls in our family room/future 3rd bedroom.

Yes, I think I’m a bad mom…that is Ty staring right at the TV.

Notice the color difference in the wood wall panels. The lighter ones were done with a chemical stripper. The darker ones were stripped with my fingernail and a small putty knife. We realized that it was actually quicker to just find an edge and start ripping. Less messy. Wish everything was going to be like that.

This is the side of one of the kitchen cabinets. The light isn’t great as the afternoon sun was beaming in. But, the wood is really nice and the new Soy Gel stripper (non-toxic apparently) made the paint practically fall off. We’re feeling pretty hopeful right now.
