Stripping the Beams – Update

by lesley on June 25, 2009

Back in February, we started doing some testing of the stripping process. Since every last drop of the wood in our house is painted, we have a lot of work to do. We tested sanders, very toxic strippers, non-toxic strippers, etc. I wrote about our testing here.

I got a great comment and tip from Troy at Kingswood Redux in Pennsylvania. He turned me onto this crazy (and expensive) tool called the Paintshaver to strip our beams with. He had seen it used on an Eichler in San Mateo, CA here.

After some research, we decided to make the leap and buy the Paintshaver. It’s tough work, but we think it’s cut about 75% of the time out. The tool works best going from right to left movement, which really wears on your right shoulder. Unfortunately, Tim’s right shoulder is shot. But, my brother, Kirby, was here and helped us get the entire interior beams all stripped. Tim has been doing the detailed sanding now.

Even rough, it looks great. We think we’ll go with a light stain, but the wood looks great so far.
