Remodel

In Progress & seeing some light

by lesley on August 29, 2009

I’ve been short on the posts lately, but we’ve been deep in the remodel. Here’s what we have going on this week. Stripping hell continues. I seriously think I am paying penance for property damage I must have inflicted in a previous life. The back of the house has been completely ripped out & is [...]

More Stripping Hell

by lesley on August 14, 2009

Stripping hell continues. Let’s review what we are stripping in our little house. 1. All of the Doug Fir beams – like 30 feet long and maybe 20 of them. 2. All of the mahogany trim and wood around the house. Yes, idiots covered it all in paint. 3. Concrete Block inside and outside the [...]

It’s been a busy week with our remodel. The excavators moved many, many truckloads of dirt from our backyard. I thought we accidentally ordered a swimming pool! The excavators pulled up the two remaining tree stumps and then did all of the rough grading in the back yard. The excavators dug the big HOLE that [...]

Excavation Has Finally Started

by lesley on July 11, 2009

After MUCH preparation and scheduling and wondering if we were crazy (yes), excavation has begun! I stopped by the house and thought they must have accidentally been digging for a swimming pool. We’ve Got the Permits!

by lesley on July 1, 2009

We got our permits for the entire house remodel today. I had a little shock when I had to pay $3850 for a USE TAX in addition to the $1800 or so for the building permit. Apparently, I can ask all contractors to NOT charge me sales tax, so I think it’s a big wash, [...]

Oh Crap. I hope we don’t have asbestos.

by lesley on June 30, 2009

I sort of remember someone mentioning asbestos testing, but it sort of flew out of my head. I forgot about it until Tim removed the luan mahogany panels in the living room (soon to be 3rd bedroom) and saw the very gnarly insulation. Tim wondered aloud if it might be asbestos. So, I hit the [...]

Demolishing the Kitchen

by lesley on June 29, 2009

My brother, Kirby, and my Dad came out from Louisiana for the week to help with the demolition. They gutted the kitchen and removed the kitchen cabinets with the most loving care possible, since we want to re-use every last drop of our mahogany. We knew the frames (outer parts) were made from solid mahogany [...]

We started out with about 150 random rocks in our backyard. Some were over a foot in diameter, but most were about a foot. My parents took about 20 to Louisiana. I sold a few barrel loads on Craigslist. My neighbors took a few of them. I started to get a bit more desperate, so [...]
